Claudia Black, M.S.W., Ph.D. is a renowned addictions and codependency expert. In this video she talks about addiction in the family.
Denial: addiction in the family
This latest video discusses how difficult it is to get people out of denial because of the pain. It is painful to truly see this topic. Also, this video addresses issues of powerlessness, unmanageability and tough love.
Personal and why addiction is in the family
The reason I like Dr. Claudia Black is that she herself was an adult child of an alcoholic father. She has a passion for young people experiencing these effects. Therefore, much of her focus started with writing children's books. As a result, these books explain alcoholism in very simple language.
Children's Artwork a visual example.
In this latest video, she explains these difficult situations. She explains how the family changes. Slowly and gradually, people change.. Giving specific examples, she draws upon her children in their artwork. Their artwork is visual. Thus, she gets across several concepts in recovery.
Updated language about addiction.
Dr. Black also has updated some of the terms. As the result of our nation's opiate crisis, the language describing this situation has changed. Therefore, she includes today's latest information not just on alcohol but includes pill and drug addiction.
She starts to explain in a simple understandable way how the family becomes affected. As the result, her analogy is that of a set of dominoes. Therefore, each domino affects the other.
Family Disease
Addiction is a family disease. This affects all of the family members. Few people can easily see these changes over time. Few people are aware that the effect of this. It can be like the frog in boiling water. At first the water is pleasant. However, as the burner underneath continues, the frog adapts. Eventually, it is too late. The frog realizes it's time to "jump out" of the water. However, by this time, the frog may be too "sick" to even jump out.
