Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12 steps are being explained by Father Martin. He is famous for making early films on alcoholism. Therefore, he takes us through all of the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous with Father Martin and with the blessings of the AA movement.
Larger than life priest
Father Martin is a larger than life personality. As a Catholic priest, he was careful to separate his religion from the spirituality shown in the 12 steps in Alcoholics Anonymous. Therefore, he is showing how 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous works regardless of religious belief.
His films are the first films on alcoholism. Therefore, these films were shown in the new treatment centers starting to crop up in America. Without boring people, this gifted priest is able to entertain and educate all kinds of people. It is particularly significant that he, himself, was a recovering alcoholic. In an age where priests or clergy were seen as immune from the disease, his example of recovery was inspiring.
By his example, anyone could be an alcoholic/addict and recover. His message is inspiring.
Here’s an example of his personal story at an AA meeting.
History
He himself went through treatment for alcoholism at a place called the Guest House. In 1942, Father Martin graduated from Loyola College and entered St. Mary’s seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1948. He underwent rigorous training to become a Sulpician, a highly regarded teaching society within the Catholic Church. After losing this coveted distinction as a result of his drinking, only in sobriety did he regain this title.
International speaker
In his career Father Martin’s career lasted more than 35 years. Father Martin was catapulted into international acclaim. He was a prized speaker and educator on addiction and recovery thru the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. He founded Kelly Productions in 1972. He also founded his recovery center called Father Martin’s Ashley. In addition to all his accomplishment, he used this as a platform to capture the minds and hearts of millions of people.
Relevance today in Alcoholics Anonymous
Although the film is old, being made in 1972, Father Martin’s message is no less relevant today. He inspires love, service, and helpfulness to others in an age that can still use the message. Therefore, his recovery can be seen through the use of his films, audio lectures, and books. In his last year, he shares his vision. This vision was that he can be remembered so that the still suffering individual affected by addiction might benefit from his God-inspired message of hope.
